Practicing humility
4 things to think about this week + a quote: Being the CEO of your book, rolling with the punches, and practicing self-forgiveness
Hello Friends! Sorry for being a day late with this newsletter, but I’m going to take the advice of bestselling author, Dr. Ken Druck, and forgive myself as I am learning to be consistent with my content! Read more of his great interview below.
Here are 4 things to think about this week, plus a quote.
READ
“Every book is a new start-up, and you are the CEO.” Dr. Ken Druck, bestselling author, and expert in resilience, grief, and interpersonal communication, shares his favorite failures, confessions, curiosities, and advice to his younger author self in this Good Author exclusive interview. After 35 years as an author, one of the most important things he’s learned is to have people in his life he can count on to give honest feedback. We all have blind spots, he says, and “all it takes is one sentence in the introduction of your book, or a subtitle, something for people to say, ‘that book is laced with things that I don't believe in.” It takes very little for a reader to put you in a box.’” Read the full interview here:
LISTEN TO
…any show you want to be a guest on! I can’t tell you how many times new authors ask how they can get on a particular show (usually Oprah), but when I ask if they’ve watched or listened to that show in recent years, they say NO. Listen to the shows you want to be featured on. Learn how the guests carry an interview and share stories that are engaging but not promotional. Here’s a great example from an interview I booked many years ago with Wayne Dyer on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. Notice how he responds to her question, pauses, allows her to talk, then engages the viewer with stories. The goal is to leave the audience (and the host/producer) wanting more because you were such an engaging guest.
WATCH
In case you somehow missed this BBC interview a few years ago, where the guest’s children interrupt a live interview, it’s a perfect example of how you have to roll with the punches when it comes to media. And you have to learn to laugh at yourself!
KNOW
There are many tools out there that can save you a ton of time and money. Rev.com is one of them. They provide automated or human transcription services, captions, subtitles, and more. It’s as simple as downloading their app, hitting record on any conversation, then tapping “send me the transcript”! If you’re an author who is more auditory in nature (like Dr. Ken Druck), this is a great way to get your audio transcribed quickly. Hire an editor if you need them cleaned up. It’s a major time saver!
QUOTE
